5.0 "By Preston Hedrick - An Exceptional Stay"

We had an exceptional stay at Ivory Tree Lodge. We were initially hesitant to go to Pilanesberg rather than Kruger and wondered if this safari would not be as nice as those in Kruger given it was 1/3rd the price. We were wrong! The safari and park were incredible and the lodge was fantastic. It is a great value and we will likely return one day! The rooms are spacious and nice. The lodge has a safari atmosphere to it, which we liked. There are tons of animals in the park. I had previously done a safari in Botswana and we saw way more animals here. Lunch and dinner are both 3 course meals. Lunch is definitely the specialty / best meal there. Food is all included and drinks, including water, cost extra. The benefit of this is that they always make sure you have a drink in your hand by the pool if you want one. The main downside to the lodge is that the vehicles fit 10 passengers (3 rows of 3 and 1 person next to the driver). The problem is that it’s common to not be able to sit with your party in the car. People were waiting 45 minutes before the safari to get in the vehicle so they could sit with their party vs being scattered in the vehicle. This problem was likely pronounced because we were here over New Years (peak season. The other downside is that some guides are like drivers and you have to spot the animals, others are good at finding animals and others are good at teaching you things about the animals. Our guide was more of just a driver and when we were next to other vehicles we could hear them teaching the passengers about the animals they were seeing. We were a bit jealous. When you sum it all up, it’s exceptional value for the money. Of course the more expensive safaris are better, but I doubt it’s worth the extra cost. We are beyond happy with our decision to stay here!
