Our safari experience was amazing! We saw 4 of the big five and had really close views of the wildlife. Our driver did a great job. It is worth noting that the safari does not take place in Kruger National Park but that didn't affect our experience. We loved staying at the lodge, the view across the river was incredible. All staff apart from one on reception were helpful and friendly. The food was fine but nothing special.

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and not just rest but have a fun filled time with friends and family, trust me, this is the place to visit. From safari drives, hiking trails, four-wheel driving, spa treatments, and hot air balloon rides 😍 you will definitely have a wonderful time. The downsides are the +-20-minute gravel drive from the gate to the hotel itself, and the rooms need a bit of an upgrade, but overall, it's a must visit 👌
My husband and I had an overnight in Johannesburg before our flight back to the states and our travel agent booked us at the ARH. The proximity to the airport and the safety of the area made it an ideal choice. It ended up being the perfect last stop. The rooms were spacious and filled with beautiful art and furnishings and the overall ambience of the hotel was tranquil. We were able to rest and recharge before a long travel day home. The staff was so kind and we enjoyed two delicious meals at the restaurant. I also loved all of the personal touches, you can tell how much time owners have spent making this a special place. The curio shop even has really special gifts and art that has all been locally sourced. We hadn’t been looking forward to our forced overnight before a long travel day but the ARH made it the best ending to our trip.
Where to start... Makumu will forever hold a very special spot in our hearts. Absolutely everything about Makumu from start to finish is perfect. The lodge itself, the lovely people behind it, the food, the rooms, the atmosphere, the game drives, everything is immaculate. The lodge radiates luxury, but also blends seamlessly with the bushveld. The sweeping views, the candlelight and the attentive care everyone lays to ensure that your stay is as memorable as possible, are only a few things I'd like to mention. The entire staff genuinely love what they do and make a great effort to get to know the guests and give them the feeling of belonging. Every dietary requirement was considered and every wish we had was taken into consideration. We had our engagement at Makumu and the entire staff helped me plan the entire day and made sure that it was as memorable as possible.
We want to thank Shelley, Ruan, Thomas, Julia, Maggy and everyone else for making this a once-in-a-lifetime stay. We can only recommend Makumu to the fullest.

We stayed here for a few days, as we explored areas along Knysna.
We were in a 2 story penthouse apartment. It has covered parking for 2 vehicles, if necessary. Entry to the property was secured by a gate accessed by key fob. Access to the building was also by key code, and there is an elevator to get up to the room.
The building is modern with beautiful glass windows, sliding and opening doors, and pivoting top windows. On the shared floor, there was an outdoor patio with hot tub, dining table. There are two living rooms, both of which access the two top floor balconies. The kitchen and dining room were spacious, and the back room has a dishwasher, sink and washer and dryer.
The master bedroom had access to the balcony from the room and bath. The bath included vanity sinks, a garden tub and walk in in rain shower.
Beds were comfortable.
The masterpiece of the unit was the breathtaking views of the water, shore, ocean and bay.
It has access to 2 restaurants. Both of which had excellent food, service, ambience and views. One is an Italian pizza kitchen and the other is a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.
We did not notice anyone else staying there at the time so it was very quiet.
This is a must visit. I’d stay here again!
